A daily devotional moment by Chris Garcia
Romans 8:1–11 (NKJV): There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
What does it mean to walk according to the flesh? It means that you walk according to the dictates and the impulses of your fallen nature. Your lower nature. The flesh. The flesh doubts. The flesh is unbelieving. The flesh is fearful. The flesh is unable to submit to God. Do you walk according to the Spirit? What exactly does it mean to walk according to the Spirit? It is to seek and walk after His presence. To walk after His Word. To walk after what pleases Him. To follow Him at all costs. Even if you trip or fall, you get back up, dust yourself off, and follow Him with all your heart. He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.
Romans 8:2 says, “For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” The law of the Spirit of life. What is the Spirit of life? It is the Spirit of God. The resurrection life. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. You see, because He lives, you are now free from the law of sin and death. So you may ask yourself, why do I keep on sinning? It is because you do not realize what has already been given to you. Do you want to break the cycle of sin in your life? Follow Jesus. Follow His presence. Draw near to Him daily. I promise you as you draw near to the presence of Christ, you will have a different relationship with sin. This does not mean you will never get tempted again, but sin will no longer lay a captive hold on you. You might ask why that is. The answer is because of the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. You will then begin to realize that you have been made free already, by the law of sin and death. There is a higher law, it is the resurrection life. It sets us free from the law of sin, death, and self-condemnation.
